Highlights from SPIE Medical Imaging 2018 – Image-guided procedures, robotic interventions, and modeling conference

SPIE Medical Imaging was held in February in Houston, Texas. The Image-guided Procedures, Robotic Interventions, and Modeling Conference (chaired by Baowei Fei (Emory University) and Bob Webster (Vanderbilt University)) was a great success. Highlights included:

MD Anderson Tour and Joint Session

The conference leveraged the proximity to University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center to create intersectional meetings with clinicians and conference attendees. Organized by Kristy Brock (MD Anderson), John Hazle (MD Anderson), and Jeff Siewerdsen (Johns Hopkins), conference attendees boarded a bus on Monday evening to tour the Image-Guided cancer Therapy Facilities. On Tuesday, MD Anderson clinicians were invited to speak at a joint forum at the conference. Event attendees reported that this opportunity was one of the highpoints of the conference.

Journal of Medical Imaging Special Issue Session

Mike Miga (Vanderbilt University) and Amber Simpson (Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center) hosted an evening session to highlight the Journal of Medical Imaging special issue on Image-guided Procedures, Robotic Interventions, and Modeling. The call for papers for the special issue was sent in February 2017. Submissions were due in August 2017. Authors were given the opportunity to present their paper from the special issue at the conference. Presented papers represented a cross section of the highly translational work in the field.
